Georgia Southern is halfway through spring practice, and 5 storylines are burning up message boards for the Eagle faithful:
This is your team Lee Chapple
Many questions were answered the last game of the season when Chapple was given the opportunity to lead the Eagles. Poise, confidence and accuracy dripped from this freshman last season. Will he be able to build on the momentum of last year?
Let's get defensive
Last in turnover margin in the SoCon along with giving up 26 points/game killed the Eagle defense last year. Some question whether the 3-3-5 is the answer, but with key players on defense a little more seasoned, this defense should be much improved. Assuming guys return and stay healthy, leaders on the defense this year should be:
Brent Russell
EJ Webb
Kerry Bonds
JB Shippy
Carson Hill
Wide Receivers
Talent was lost in the receiving group from last year, yet young guys are in position to lead. Chris Rodgers was pulled over from the D to inject some senior leadership. Leander Barney and Nick Kyles will be given every opportunity to showcase their talent as well. I think we may see some freshmen pull off that redshirt and produce right away. Chapple should have a young stable of wideouts to throw to in 2009.
Youth To Lead
It's no secret this team was young last year, but with the amount of time logged on the field in 2008, these guys are seasoned young guys. Stability is slowly coming around and it will be interesting to see who steps up as a leader of this team in 2009.
The guys no one talks about
Every good team has a core of players that are unheralded yet critical to the success of the team. GS should be no different in 2009. These guys will fly under the radar for many, but will produce on and OFF the field in a leadership role.
Marc Thomas
David Lewis
Billy Lowe
Harland Bower
Ronnie Wiggins
Adrian Mora
Dion Dubose
2009 should be a fantastic year for Georgia Southern on the football field. As the program becomes more stable, great things will happen for these young group of guys.
