Top 5 GS Football Memories

"Those were the good 'ol days" is a phrase you won't hear too often in or around Paulson Stadium. Most GS fans think the best days of the program are still yet to be seen.

I will share with you my top 5 GS moments since my introduction to GS football in 1995. Contact me and share me your favorite memory from your experience as a GS fan, and I'll share them on the site.

5. PJ's second home game as the GS head coach. William and Mary came into Paulson Stadium ranked #2. We unfortunately lost that game, but it was certainly an example of taking a step back to take 5 steps forward. We learned that day the team was in good hands with PJ as the head coach.

4. In 1998 Western Illinois visited "Our House" for a National Semifinal game. Their highly touted defense got trampled by an option blitzkrieg. To this day, I've never heard a more rowdy crowd than the one that day.

3. UMass the revenge. The minutemen (reportedly named by homecoming dates of the football team) were losers the time they stepped off the bus. Peterson racked up 333 yards and 5 TD's to avenge the Championship loss from 1998. Stupid Yankees.

2. The #1 team in the country lost earlier in the day. Appalachian State entered as the #3 team in the country while GS held the #2 monikor. The winner would be the best team in the country according to the polls. The game shaped up to be a good one, but Appy couldn't keep up with the option. Game. Set. Match. Eagles #1.

1. Only Erk Russell comes to mind when I think of the best memory of my experience with GS football, and I think he said it best:

"I'm gonna get outta here while I'm still alive...And I'm gonna say it just one more time. We're Georgia Southern. Our colors are blue and white, we call ourselves the bald eagles...we call our offense the Georgia Power Company and that's a terrific name for an offense...and our snap count is, "Rate-Hike". We practice on the beautiful banks of Eagle Creek...and that's in Statesboro, Georgia...the gnat capital of America. Our weekends begin on Thursday and the co-eds outnumber the men 3-2. And they're all pretty and they're all rich. And folks, you just can't beat that! And you just can't beat Georgia Southern! And you ain't seen nothing yet! Thanks y'all!"
